in the new chapter, roger refers to “king of the pirates” having a nice ring to it, which means he didn’t aspire to be pirate king or even know that was a thing until the media gave him the title
this confirms that whatever roger’s aspiration was that he told to whitebeard and oden in 966, it wasn’t that he wanted to king of the pirates
in turn, this implies that whatever luffy said in chapter 585, which the above scene is an exact parallel to, also wasn’t that he wanted to be king of the pirates, which is what i and i think most people originally assumed upon reading it
sooo…..
WHAT did they both say, then??!!!
WHAT IS IT, SHANKS
i’ve seen a lot of ppl responding to this saying that they’re probably just saying they want to be free/freer than anyone else, and i understand that bc that was my first thought too, but remember how their brothers/friends responded to what they said….
i don’t think that something as simple as “i want to be free” would shock oden and ace that much, or be something that whitebeard would consider childish, or make sabo laugh (esp since sabo’s whole thing was that he wanted to be free, you’d think he’d just be like “me too!!” lol)
idk, but these reactions just wouldn’t feel right to me if that were the case, nor do i see any point in oda obscuring something that luffy’s already said on-screen at another point in the manga. i think it’s something wilder and sillier than that.
Crocodile isn’t the sort of guy to keep pretty flowers in his office, but Robin certainly is, making this not only a nice foreshadowing of Crocodile’s power but also extremely rude
